A visit to Mark Twain's Hannibal, Mo.

Reporting from Hannibal, Mo. — It was long after dark when Henry Sweets brought me to Hannibal's Old Baptist Cemetery, "a graveyard of the old-fashioned Western kind." No moon. Ragged weeds, crumbling gravestones. We tried to tread lightly, but it had been raining, and mud grabbed at our shoes. Down at the bottom of the hill, the Mississippi churned. I had to smile, because here I was, three decades removed from 11th grade, still slogging through American literature.

This, as Sweets explained, was the cemetery Mark Twain remembered when he imagined the midnight murder of Doc Robinson in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"— grave markers leaning every which way, Tom and Huck hiding behind a tree, and the treacherous Injun Joe burying a knife in his victim's chest.

Pinnacles National Monument: California's new National Park?

To contact us Click HERE

Pinnacles National Monument, a 26,000-acre swath of spectacular volcanic rock formations outside Soledad, Calif., would be elevated to a National Park under legislation introduced Thursday by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.)

Pinnacles is a nesting place for the endangered California condor, North America's largest soaring bird, with wingspans up to 10 feet. And it is a global destination for naturalists and outdoor adventurers attracted by the park's scenic views and unique rock-climbing landscapes. Making Pinnacles a National Park, Boxer said, would "draw even more visitors to this spectacular piece of California's natural and cultural heritage."

In a recent travel piece on Pinnacle's condors for the Los Angeles Times, Tom Bentley described the monument as "an otherworldly place of jutting rock spires and twisted towers that looks as though it was wrenched from dinosaur times. 'Wrenched' is fitting: The park's craggy upthrusts are the partial remains of an ancient volcano. It's a landscape in which a pterodactyl might choose to make its home, and thus a bird almost as rare (and with an impressive 10-foot wingspan) would feel cozy here too."

SUMMER CAMP! THE MUSICAL

Table 8 Productions presents the World Premiere of the raunchy, rockin’ comedy
Summer Camp! The Musical
Book by Troy Heard, Music by Angela Chan, Lyrics by Heard and Chan.
Opening Night: Friday, August 10, 2012Plays at 8pm Fridays through Sundays through August 26
The Onyx Theatre in Commercial Center 953 E. Sahara Ave. #16
Directed by Heard with musical direction by Chan.

It’s Summer 1982: Reagan’s in the White House, the Russians are building the bomb, and rustic Camp Tigglebitties is a hormonal hotbed where ubernerds Nolan and Dwight vow to lose their virginity to the gorgeous Lacey St. Clair...at the possible expense of their friendship. Serious questions are raised: can Dwight enlist help from Obi-Wan? Who will win the Kotex 500? And what IS The Mook?

Summer Camp! is a musical homage to the classic genre of the early 1980s cinema popularly known as the Teen Sex Comedy,” says Heard, who was selected Best Director of 2011 by NPR’s Desert Companion magazine. “I remember staying up late many Saturday nights to watch Porky’s, Meatballs and Revenge of the Nerds on HBO. And like any red-blooded, prepubescent male I always thought there was way too much story between the shower scenes. This is my chance to fix that...while amping the awesomeness by adding musical numbers in different 80s rock-and-roll styles.”

“We’ve also jumped on the audience interaction bandwagon with this one,” Heard says. “There’s a splash zone, of course, but since this is a sex comedy and not a horror spoof like Evil Dead, Summer Camp! is definitely adults only!”

Tickets are $15.00 and are available at the door and on www.onyxtheatre.com.

GOD LIVES IN GLASS - Benefit Concert

The Nevada Conservatory Theatre Presents:
God Lives in GlassReflections of God as seen through the eyes of children
August 25 and 26 at 2pmUNLV Judy Bailey Theatre
Tickets: $25

"A powerful and astonishing work...will blow you away...Keith Thompson's score is a revelation...provocative, original, and - quite simply - amazing."

Featuring performers from The Lion King, Love, Jersey Boys, "O", Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular, Menopause The Musical, Vegas! the Show, Surf the Musical, and the UNLV Music and Theatre Departments.
The events of September 11th, 2001 inspired the writing and the original production of "God Lives in Glass" as a way of reaching across racial, cultural and religious boundaries to promote global unity acceptance of cultural diversity.

The musical is based on a book by the same title, written by the head of Drama Therapy at New York University, Dr. Robert J. Landy, Ph.D. The book contains drawings, stories, and reflections about God that were created and shared by children from all around the world, from different cultures, races, and religions. The insights and visions of these young spiritual thinkers are funny, moving, entertaining, and often enlightening.

Shortly after the events of 9/11, Dr. Landy collaborated with Composer Keith Thompson (conductor of "Jersey Boys" in Las Vegas) and Director/co-conceiver Greg Ganakas to bring musical and theatrical life to the book as a way of promoting cultural and spiritual healing and understanding.

Contrary to what the title suggests, "God Lives in Glass" is not a religious musical, or a piece of children's theatre, even though it does take a whimsical look at religion and different ideas about who or what God might be as seen through the eyes of young people from all over the planet. The Musical never attempts to instruct or promote any ideology or doctrine. It merely holds up the "glass" as a mirror that allows us a reflection of ourselves, and as a window that lets us view the world with wonder, humor, and imagination; as seen through the eyes of a child.

Las Vegas premiere of Patrick Marber’s
CLOSER

Four lives intertwine over the course of four and a half years in this densely plotted, stinging look at modern love and betrayal, in which this quartet struggle to find intimacy but can't seem to get closer.
Variety called the play:"Brilliant and bracingly adult, bruising and beautiful, shatteringly funny and devastatingly sad. It cuts like broken glass…full of bitter, intelligent, unvarnished truth.
Newsweek called it:“A powerful, darkly funny play about the cosmic collision between the sun of love and the comet of desire."
And NY Magazine said:"CLOSER does not merely hold your attention; it burrows into you."
CLOSER features Ryan Remark, Jessica Afton, Alex Olson, Breon Jenay, and is directed by Chris Mayse

Cockroach Theatre

Cockroach Theatre was founded in 2002 out of the need and desire to create powerful, evocative theatre. The original concept was to produce "new and neglected" works- either by emerging playwrights, or simply to locate and produce great plays that have gone unnoticed. Cockroach Theatre was formed. Cockroach Theatre exists to satisfy a need for defiant theatre for both artists and audiences.

Defiant (adj) "boldly resisting an opposing force"- Cockroach Theatre has made it's mission to produce this breed of theatre in the form of new and exciting works. We are resisting the idea that theatre is a stagnant and tired art form, having faith that the performance art of theatre continues to survive because of the ability to reinvent itself through the ages. People who appreciate theatre will appreciate a Cockroach Theatre Production.

Voyagers on each of the six ships have their own fearless pirate mascot whom they cheer on as the adventure unfolds with a cast a dozen actors, singers and stunt performers engaging in a bounty of action-packed exploits, accompanied by cannon blasts, pyrotechnics and plenty of laughs.

In addition, more than 150 guests have the chance to play an actual role in each show as the evil Captain Sebastian the Black leads his crews of renegades on a swashbuckling adventure before your very eyes!

Pinnacles National Monument: California's new National Park?

Seeking to Become - October 2012

As we move into autumn and winter, the thought of comfort foods and holidays draws me in and makes me want to seek shelter. There are many kinds of shelter to be after: a physical home, arms of a loved one, a listening ear, invested friendships. All of these provide shelter in the form of comfort if they are sound sources. An ever-trustworthy source of comforting shelter is our God the Father, as well as his son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. They provide the example from whence we should draw as we strive to comfort those around us.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4

It seems as if we all have our turn at being down, yet somehow there is always someone there to lift and to bless us. This thought brings me to introspection about whether or not I take my turn lifting others when I ought to. How long is the lag between when I am able and when I purposefully seek out those who need the boost that I could give them?

I am certain I receive comfort oftener than I provide it. As the month progresses, I will seek to become more like our Exemplar and comfort others as He comforts me. I hope you will join in this effort to be a safe shelter, even a comforter in troubled times.

Hot Off the Presses: Textistory

Preface

Have you ever heard of Found Poetry? If not, it is when you take a completely random text such as a short story, pages in a magazine or novel, text messages in your cell phone, etc. and create a poem using only the words and phrases found within that text with small changes for connective tissue, thus creating a completely separate and new piece of writing--a poem.

I want to take this idea and run with it. I want to create Found Stories, which I will label as Textistory. The term is a blended word from texts and history that describes a short story created entirely from text messages we send through our phones. While my first ever textistory will be solely from phone texts, the genre may include any instant/direct messaging.

Now, without any further ado, I give you

Six Weeks

Alexandria just listened to I Think We're Alone Now. No worries. She had a good night's sleep, but not in a calm, controlled type of mood. What were we expecting, really? Still, don't take things so seriously. She is in control of her state of mind and will figure it out; however, they could use a talk. She and Robert.

While together with a friend at dinner, Robert whispers I love it when you talk to me that way...I'm glad you did because life is short, Gorgeous...Do you remember you used to call me that? It makes Alexandria smile and the greenness of her eyes distracts him. That night, unadulterated by electronic devices, their voices become all tangled up, beautiful, and oh so romantic. After a few hours, both have to go but she offers a rain check for another time. So many ways to take that...

On another lovely evening, he realizes how he didn't mind being drawn in to her by lovely compliments. He thinks Be brave. So, like a shamelessly adorable door to door salesperson, he calls in the rain check. She feels fortunate even though it looks like daytime is coming.

Who knows what she told her parents so she could be awake? It takes so little to make Alexandria smile that he knows he should be crossing his fingers he doesn't fall asleep as she laughs and talks softly-- then, she only hears him breathe so she says she is proud of him, loves his writing, and a few goodbyes in sweet tones as not to wake him. Now it's her turn for falling asleep radiant with happiness.

Some time later...

He, proud as a frightened peacock, announces that he is not the marrying kind, but only dates women. History and wishing leverage against her favor. Don't wait around. She realizes the real problem has been all the ambiguity flying about. Rendered speechless, her heart crawls inside itself. Pandora's box. Her first thought is What's wrong with you? Stop. She is enough knowing genuine love can never be madness, except for when we deny or feign it. Remember, it's all about you--a wandering, divine, glimmer girl. You are it.

Exquisite. Pain. Love. Together. On the train to celebrating nothing.

So there won't be any misunderstandings, even if you are sleeping emotionally at the moment, take care and don't underestimate guys.

Epilogue:

As far as I'm concerned, texting is such a brutish way of communication. Smoke signals would be much more witty and ravishing...and nerdy.

Buried Treasure

It's been a rough and tumble type of day and all your thoughts tend to lead you into Temptation's unkind hand showing you how to loathe yourself by lathering on negative self talk and unhealthy habits that only create a thriving environment for more self-loathing, which chips away at and inevitably buries the strength you must have to blossom in such an unforgiving world with endless demands on your heart and mind and physical body, until you begin to truly want to give up on your dreams and stop caring so deeply about people who continually spurn what you have to give--what you give so freely and beautifully--as you continue on your journey toward eternity, which appears to be completely out of reach and maybe not for you, no, because maybe you don't deserve to be happy or loved or appreciated or make any measurable difference in this brutal existence since whichever direction you turn there continues to be disheartening and terribly disenchanting dead ends, but then--you reach out one more time with a quiet, pleading heart and someone is able to read your humanity right and care enough to reach out in return even though it might be a risk to take as well to show pure loving understanding, and a treasure is unearthed: friendship in its perfect form.

Fabulous: Essential Oils

To contact us Click HERE
I did an experiment this summer. A friend gave me a starter-pack of doTERRA essential oils. I promised an honest review. Since I am a lover of tried and true medications and a skeptic of natural stuff (don't ask me why), she really took a leap of faith asking for this review. I do admit that I was intrigued by the experiment, and so I was more than happy for the opportunity.

I used lavender, lemon, and peppermint and here are the results:

purple, photography, essential oils, lavender

Lavender: I used this one the very most (Need you ask why?). I applied it to the bottoms of my children's feet at bedtime and across the back of my neck when feeling stressed. The children usually have a long wind down period, but after some time of using lavender essential oil consistently, they seemed to be able to get to sleep better. They got to liking it so much that they would ask me for it.

I have stress issues. All you have to do is read every other post on here and you'll figure that one out, which means I used the lavender on the back of my neck pretty much daily if not more often. I don't care for the pungent aroma of lavender oil, but it made a difference for me. Who knows if it was just because I knew I was doing something about my stress even when there seemed to be nothing to be done, but it did help calm my nerves. That's all that matters in my book.

Lemon: A few drops of digestible grade doTERRA lemon oil in a glass of water, drinking several glasses a day, takes away swelling. I didn't read this in a book-- a sister-in-law told me and I tried it and it worked.

I had been driving in a car for way too long, staying up way too late, and getting way too little sleep and so my legs and feet suffered with discomfort due to swelling and tension. In my divalicious way, I complained to my sister-in-law. And in her patient-licious way, she reminded me about the lemon essential oil I was supposed to be to trying out and told me about the anti-swelling properties of it. I tried it for a couple of days, reaped the rewards noticeably, then proceeded to forget to continue. At the end of that day, I complained again; she reminded me again; I repented and dutifully used lemon essential oil in my drinking water the rest of the time. It really worked!

Peppermint: I've been told that peppermint essential oil helps to enliven you when sleepy and aids in concentration when studying and such. I tried it and I cannot say for certain if using it directly affected my success, but I know it didn't hurt. The tingling sensation is stimulating, and the scent itself is invigorating.

My peppermint doTERRA essential oil success story comes from when another friend of mine and I were feeling sleepy-ish at church. She had shared peppermint essential oil droplet capsules with me in the past, but this time was different. She told me to put one drop on the back of my hand and lick it with the back end of my tongue, then breathe in deeply. Wow! Talk about cleared sinuses and an awake and alert mind! My nose had been stuffy for quite some time since I have allergies, but not in that moment nor for about 24 more hours afterward. I was astonished by its immediate effectiveness--way better than popping a Sudafed pill that takes twenty minutes to work and causes me to crash and burn after the hype it causes wears off.

Because my experiment had such positive results, I am even more interested in the other benefits of using essential oils and I recommend giving doTERRA essential oils a try.

You can learn more on Facebook here: doTERRA and the direct website here: www.mydoterra.com/oil

To sweeten the end of my experiment, doTERRA essential oils will be part of
The Second Annual All Things Purple Half-Birthday Bash with a giveaway!
So be sure to come back the week of September 17-21 to join in the celebration.
Disclosure: I was given one (1) three-oil trio pack in exchange for this review.
